Tony from Green Zone Fitness loves helping and getting to know his community.
Gyms can be intimidating places. But they can also be a place to let go of stress, make friends, and improve your mental and physical health. Tony loves working hard to help Green Zone Fitness in Warwick feel like the latter.
Before a big day motivating the community, Tony grabs an oat milk latte from fellow retailer Coffee Bean House. Though, a few times, he recalls getting a bit more than just a coffee!
“There are two ladies that sit at the Coffee Bean House — one is definitely over the age of 80. They used to be quite flirty and laugh a lot when I would come by. At first, I was a bit uncomfortable, but soon I realised it was all just a bit of fun. As it went on, I used to keep them going and have a laugh! We say hello every day now.”
As it turns out, Tony loves sharing a story or two with older folks in the community. In fact, one of the moments that makes him smile the most is when he asked a 94-year-old gym member what his favourite story of his life was.
“He proceeded to tell me about the day he met his wife. Upon his return from World War II, he met up with his sister for tea, and she brought her friend. The following day, he took his sister’s friend to the Zoo, and on the boat on the way over, he asked her to marry him, and she said ‘sure, why not’.”
“The full story was around 40 minutes long, and amazing to hear. Sometimes the elderly generation have the best stories. Taking the time to listen is normally worth your time, and also makes their day.”
As well as working out and helping others live their best life, Tony enjoys taking some time out in the community garden across the road from the gym (“it’s a hidden gem”). He’s a frequent visitor of Woolworths, because he always wants a snack!
Green Zone really is a gym for the community. “Our gym belongs to our members, as much as it does to our staff,” Tony said. “We pride ourselves on our community and make it as comfortable as possible for new people to join. We have a range of group fitness classes that different gyms offer, but it’s all under one roof and for a fraction of the price.”
