Introducing our new world-first solar glass atrium.
We’re excited to finally reveal that the newly installed atrium in our north entrance car park is also the world’s first clear solar photovoltaic glass building!
Developed and installed in partnership with Perth smart technology company, ClearVue Technologies - www.clearvuepv.com, while our new atrium looks like any other glass structure it also functions as a large solar installation capable of harvesting solar energy for the centre to use. The results of which are also displayed on a dashboard just inside the entrance itself (feel free to take a closer look next time you visit).
The solar glass atrium works by collecting infra-red light and deflecting it to the glass surface edge where it’s converted to electricity. As ClearVue’s solar PV glass is also completely transparent it allows all the visible light through but also provides enhanced protection from UV light for our customers. Our clear solar glass atrium installation is also the first of its kind used in a commercial venture globally.
Vicinity’s Executive General Manager Shopping Centre Management, Justin Mills recently commented on the project: “We’re excited to be trialling such innovative, leading-edge technology and embarking on a global first in solar energy application.
“ClearVue could transform the way we use glass in our centres, which reinvents the way we harvest renewable energy, reduces our exposure to the volatile energy market and our carbon footprint – a key focus for Vicinity.”
Vicinity has already committed to $73 million of investment in shopping centre solar – the largest project of its kind in Australia – across 22 centres with a total capacity of 31 megawatts which will be completed in 2019.
The clean energy generated by our new solar glass atrium will provide the centre with renewable energy and create a more sustainable and connected destination for our local Warwick community.
